How to Redesign a Website Without Losing SEO Traffic: A Checklist
A redesign without preparation can lower traffic and search rankings. We explain how to keep your SEO during a redesign: what to record before changes, what to check before launch and how to monitor the result afterwards.

A website redesign is an update of the look, structure or technical base of a website that already works. If you do not prepare for it, the risk of losing traffic and search rankings is very real. One thing matters: most often traffic drops not because of the new design but because of technical changes nobody tracked: changed page addresses without redirects, missing texts and a version of the site closed from indexing.
Why a redesign can lower traffic
- Page addresses changed. Without correct redirects old URLs return an error, and the accumulated “weight” of the pages is lost.
- Texts disappeared or shrank. Pages that ranked thanks to their content lose it together with their positions.
- Structure and internal links changed. Search engines understand worse which pages matter.
- The block on indexing stayed. A test version is closed from search, and after launch nobody remembers to open it.
- Metadata was lost. Titles, descriptions and markup were not moved to the new pages.
- The new site is slower. Heavy effects and scripts worsen speed and usability.
- Content search cannot see. Text is loaded by scripts and crawlers do not read it.
What to do before the work starts
- Record the current state. Save data on traffic, positions, indexing and leads from Search Console and analytics.
- Make a full list of the site’s addresses. Crawl the site to collect all pages with their titles, descriptions and H1.
- Identify the pages that bring traffic and leads. Protect them first.
- Keep working texts and metadata. Do not rewrite what ranks without a reason.
- Write down the internal link structure. Important pages should stay reachable from the same places.
- Record speed. The new version should not be slower than the old one.
If you are not sure where to start, an SEO audit before the redesign will help.
What to take into account during development
- The test environment is closed from search. This is right during development, but you need to remember it before launch.
- Keep the address structure. If addresses change, prepare a full redirect map from old pages to new ones.
- Move metadata and markup. Titles, descriptions, Schema.org, canonical.
- Do not remove content that works. You can simplify pages, but not lose their search substance.
- Keep internal linking. Menus, breadcrumbs and links in the text should lead to the same important pages.
- Take care of languages and regions. If the website is multilingual, check hreflang on all versions.
- Watch speed and the mobile version. We describe the technical foundation in our technical SEO service and speeding up a site in our website speed service.
Pre-launch checklist
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| 301 redirects for all changed addresses | Preserve traffic and the accumulated weight of pages |
| robots.txt file and the noindex meta tag | The new environment must not stay closed from indexing |
| Canonical and language versions | Show search the right page addresses |
| XML sitemap | Contains new addresses and no extra ones |
| Title, description, H1 | Moved to the new pages |
| Analytics and lead tracking | Without them the effects of launch are invisible |
| Forms, buttons, phone | Leads must not disappear on launch day |
| 404 page and redirect chains | Visitors and page weight are not lost |
What to do after launch
- Submit the updated sitemap in Search Console and check that new pages are being indexed.
- Check for errors. 404s, redirect chains, pages closed from indexing.
- Compare the metrics with those recorded before the redesign. Traffic, positions, leads.
- Monitor changes for several weeks. A small fluctuation after launch is normal, a lasting drop is a signal to look for the cause.
- Fix quickly. The sooner you find a problem, the less traffic you lose.
