What Are Google AI Overviews and How Do They Affect Your Site

AI Overviews are a feature in Google Search where AI, powered by Gemini models, writes a short summary answering a query and links to the pages the information came from. The summary appears above or among the regular results, mostly for informational and complex queries. For websites, AI Overviews bring both the risk of losing some clicks and the chance to become a source Google cites in its answer.

Where AI Overviews came from

Google first tested generative answers in search as an experiment called Search Generative Experience (SGE), available to users who opted in through Search Labs. In 2024, the feature launched for everyone as AI Overviews, starting in the US, and Google has been gradually expanding it to more countries and languages since then. Whether an overview appears for a given query depends on the language, the country, and the query itself, so it’s worth checking in your own market.

Later, Google added AI Mode, a separate search experience where people have a conversation with Google: they ask follow-up questions and get detailed answers with links. AI Mode is available only where Google has rolled it out, which varies by country and language, so it may not be live in your market yet. AI Overviews are a short summary inside the familiar results page; AI Mode is a full conversation.

How AI Overviews work

When someone enters a query, Google decides whether an AI summary would be helpful. If so, the system pulls information from pages already in Google’s index, writes an answer, and adds links to its sources, either inline, to the side, or below the summary. Google has described how, for complex questions, the system can run several related searches on subtopics and assemble the answer from different pages.

AI Overviews show up more often for queries like these:

  • “how,” “why,” and “which is better” questions, and comparisons between options;
  • complex queries with several conditions, such as “how to choose a CRM for a small online store that ships orders”;
  • queries where the person needs an explanation rather than a specific website.

They appear less often for navigational queries, when someone is looking for a specific brand or site, and for simple queries where the regular results are enough.

AI Overviews vs AI Mode vs featured snippets

  • A featured snippet is a verbatim excerpt from a single page shown above the search results, with a link to that page.
  • AI Overviews are generated text based on several sources, with several links; the wording is Google’s, not the page author’s.
  • AI Mode is a separate conversational experience with longer answers and often more links, available where Google has rolled it out.

What they have in common: all three pull information from indexed pages and favor pages that answer the question directly and clearly.

How AI Overviews affect your site

The impact is mixed, and it varies by query type. Here are the main effects:

  • Fewer clicks on simple informational queries. When people get the answer right in search, some of them never click through to a site.
  • Visibility for sources. A site cited in an AI Overview gets its brand shown near the top of the page, even if it ranks lower in the classic results.
  • A different kind of click. Google says people who click through from AI Overviews tend to stay on the site longer because they already have a basic grasp of the topic. It’s worth checking that against your own data.
  • A shift in competition. The race is no longer only for the top ranking but also for a spot among the summary’s sources.

For business websites, the key point is that AI Overviews often appear while people are still deciding what they need. If your site is the source of the explanation, your brand gets noticed before the customer starts comparing companies.

How to get into AI Overviews

Google says plainly that there’s no special optimization required for AI Overviews: a page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet in regular search. The rest is solid SEO with a focus on answers:

  1. Technical basics. The page is indexed, not blocked from showing snippets, loads fast, and works properly on mobile.
  2. Answer first. The opening paragraph of each section answers the question directly, followed by details, lists, and tables.
  3. Full topic coverage. Since the system breaks complex questions into subtopics, your page should also answer related questions: cost, timelines, comparisons, and common mistakes.
  4. Expertise. It’s clear who wrote the content or which team stands behind it, with practical examples, firsthand experience, and a last-updated date.
  5. Structured data. Google doesn’t require any special markup for AI Overviews, but Article, Organization, Product, and FAQPage markup helps machines read a page accurately when it matches the visible text. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026, yet FAQPage markup can stay in place.
  6. Images and video. These can appear alongside the answer, so it pays to have your own visuals with descriptive captions.

How to control how your content is used

If you don’t want certain text used in summaries, Google offers the same tools it provides for regular snippets: the nosnippet and max-snippet meta tags and the data-nosnippet attribute for specific parts of a page. Keep in mind that these also limit your regular snippets in search results, so use them selectively. Also note that the Google-Extended setting in robots.txt doesn’t affect AI Overviews; it covers the use of your content for Gemini models.

If your goal is the opposite and you want to be cited more often, make sure none of these restrictions are on your pages by accident. Sometimes they’re added by a theme, a plugin, or old SEO settings.

Where a business should start

You don’t have to rebuild your whole site at once. It’s more practical to start with a few steps:

  1. List 20 to 30 queries customers use to find solutions in your niche, and check which of them already trigger AI Overviews.
  2. For each of those queries, look at which sites get cited and how their pages differ from yours in structure, depth, and specifics.
  3. Update your pages for those queries: add a direct answer up top, sections covering related questions, an FAQ, and a last-updated date.
  4. Once the pages are reindexed, run the check again and compare how impressions, clicks, and the list of cited sources have changed.

Repeat this cycle regularly, since AI summaries change and your competitors keep updating their pages too.

How to track results

Since June 2026, Search Console has a separate Search Generative AI performance report, and since August 31 it has been available to every site. It shows how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by page, country, device, and date. It doesn’t include clicks or queries yet: clicks from AI summaries are still counted in the overall Performance report. So the full picture still comes from several sources:

  • the Search Generative AI performance report in Search Console, for which pages appear in Google’s AI answers and how often;
  • manual checks of your key queries, noting whether an overview appears and who’s cited in it;
  • SEO tools that track AI Overviews for your keywords;
  • changes in impressions, clicks, and CTR in Search Console for the pages you’ve updated;
  • leads and visitor behavior on those pages in GA4.

Frequently asked questions

Can I opt my site out of AI Overviews?

You can't remove the feature from search results, but you can limit how your text is used with the nosnippet or max-snippet meta tags or the data-nosnippet attribute. These restrictions also apply to your regular snippets, so use them with care.

Do I need special markup to appear in AI Overviews?

No, Google doesn't require any special markup or files for AI Overviews. A page just needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet; Schema.org structured data simply helps Google understand the content more precisely.

Do AI Overviews take traffic away from websites?

For simple informational queries, some people do get their answer without clicking. At the same time, cited sites gain visibility at the top of the page, so the net effect is best measured with your own data in Search Console and GA4.

How are AI Overviews different from AI Mode?

AI Overviews are a short AI summary inside regular Google results. AI Mode is a separate conversational search experience where you can ask follow-up questions and get detailed answers with links. It's available only where Google has rolled it out, which varies by country and language.
